The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for performing all echocardiography-related procedures in varied settings. This role requires a comprehensive knowledge of cardiovascular principles and ultrasound physics and instrumentation as well as the ability to produce and evaluate cardiac ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to render a medical diagnosis. The cardiac sonographer is responsible for acting as a liaison between staff, physicians, patients and family members while exercising discretion and judgment in the performance of the clinical examination. The cardiac sonographer will also provide the physician with an oral or written summary of the technical findings as well as provide patient education. The cardiac sonographer serves patients of all ages. This position includes on-call duties (nights, weekends and Holidays) on a rotational basis.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

• Undertakes rigorous cardiac examinations in adherence to departmental protocols and procedures.
• Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
• Proficient in utilizing echocardiography instruments and analyzing outcomes.
• Scrutinizes the request to ascertain the appropriateness of the orders, the planned exam date, and the justification for conducting the exam.
• Tasks consist of carrying out venipuncture, introducing an intravenous line, and providing intravenous solutions, ultrasound enhancing substances, or other pharmacological agents to optimize image clarity or gather additional diagnostic information.
• Aids cardiologists in reviewing test results by providing accurate information following exam procedures.
• Selects the proper imaging modalities that align with the exam's indication.
• Demonstrates mastery in imaging and transmitting echocardiography results to the appropriate PACs database.
• Offers appropriate early-stage results for the cardiologist's viewing in the electronic medical records database.
• Checks that the EMR shows the correct procedure type and charges are correctly billed for the associated supplies.
• Adheres to the quality standards mandated for the laboratory by the director of medical imaging.
• The significance of meticulousness and versatility in a swiftly changing healthcare sector.
• Undertake any other assigned obligations.

Additional Requirements

Required:

Education - High School Diploma/GED Equivalent: General Studies

Graduate - Radiology Program with additional ultrasound training or Sonography program

Certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) - Within 60 days of hire or transfer; ARDMS - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography orARRT with Advanced Ultrasound Certification

Regarding BLS certification:

The department you are applying to may require BLS certification sooner than 60 days post transfer/hire. The hiring manager will discuss this with you if it is applicable.

Preferred:

Education - Associates: Related Field

Experience - 1+ years of Sonographer Experience; 1+ years of Staff Technologist Experience

**Policy Number: MIS-7040-115 - Caregivers must be BLS certified upon employment or within their 90-day probation period.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy work - exerting up to 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or up to 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or up to 100 pounds of force occassionally (up to 33% of the time), and or up to 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
