Job Summary

The Medical Oncology Registered Nurse provides direct care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric oncology patients receiving chemotherapy in an outpatient setting. Responsibilities include calculating and administering chemotherapy doses based on the Medical Oncologist’s treatment plans. The role involves conducting biopsychosocial assessments, providing patient education, and offering follow-up nursing care. The nurse will support cancer patients throughout their active treatment, palliative, and end-of-life care, adhering to hospital standards, policies, and the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act. The Medical Oncology RN consistently practices patient- and family-centered care to enhance safety, quality, and satisfaction.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Displays the ability to administer chemotherapy treatments in compliance with national standards and hospital policies.
  • Shows the ability to effectively assess patients, implement clinical interventions, evaluate outcomes, and adjust the care plan as needed.
  • Prioritizes and organizes delivery of care in a consistent manner. Initiates interdisciplinary collaboration to promote optimal patient care and outcomes.
  • Initiates Interdisciplinary collaboration to promote optimal patient care and outcomes.
  • Provides education for patients and families receiving chemotherapy treatments.
  • Instructs patient/family/team in treatment plan and goals.
  • Initiates authorization process for all new chemotherapy /supportive care treatments, as well as diagnostic tests through referral to patient navigators.
  • Recognizes potential emergency/life threatening situations and initiates appropriate actions as evidenced by observation and chart review.
  • Takes part in orienting, teaching, and mentoring personnel and/or students, guiding their performance.
  • Participates in departmental processes/functions to improve departmental efficiency and financial viability.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Required:

Education - Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursingCertification - Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing

Preferred:

Experience - 1+ years of Acute Experience; 1+ years of Oncology ExperienceCertification - Oncology Nursing Certification (ONC) - Accredited University or accredited training professionals

Physical Requirements:

Very Heavy work - exerting over 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), and/or more than 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force occassionally (up to 33% of the time), and/or more than 100 pounds of force seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
